Brian Harman claims shock victory at The Open as Rory McIlroy's drought continues

But Harman recovered, regaining his advantage with back-to-back birdies at the sixth and the seventh.

As the star-studded chasing pack lost momentum, a string of comfortable pars and two birdies on the back nine gave Harman all the breathing room he needed to cruise over the line. McIlroy failed to make any further progress after reaching six-under par at the fifth hole and finished tied for sixth. It is the Northern Irishman's 20th top-ten finish in major championships since his last victory at the PGA Championship in 2014.

That year also saw him win The Open at Hoylake - and nobody would've expected him to return empty-handed in the majors nine years later.Topics
