Justin Verlander can exercise a $35 million player option for 2025 if he pitches 140 innings in 2024. . A trade of either or both probably would be impossible for every other club, which is to say, all those not owned by Cohen. Heck, it will be far from simple even if Cohen is ready to money-whip prospective suitors, including enough cash in the deals to all but force teams to say, “yes.”
For starters, both Scherzer and Verlander possess full no-trade protection, giving them, at the very least, the ability to control the process. Their respective contracts include other complicating elements, as well. Scherzer, who turns 39 on July 27, can opt out after this season or return for his final year at $43.33 million. Verlander, 40, can exercise a $35 million player option for 2025 if he pitches 140 innings in ‘24.
At the deadline, each pitcher will be owed about $14 million for the rest of the season. Cohen, if he chooses, can cover the vast majority of either or both sums, effectively buying prospects. Prospective trade partners also might set conditions requiring him to pay down future salaries if indeed they must be paid. Such payments would mitigate any luxury-tax savings.Cohen might not care. Verlander’s season debut was delayed until May 4 due to a shoulder issue strain. Scherzer made his best start of the season Sunday, holding the Dodgers to one hit in seven scoreless innings. But after twice going on the injured list last season, he had a start in April pushed back because of shoulder soreness and was scratched from another start in May because of neck spasms.
Now look to 2024. A trade of Scherzer and/or Verlander would leave the Mets with at least one opening in their rotation next season, possibly two and maybe even three, assuming they do not re-sign
