A study identified a link between the length of someone’s career and the risk of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE)

Ange Capuozzo of Italy receives medical treatment for a head injury, before leaving the field, during the Rugby World Cup match between France and Italy earlier this month players who enjoy long careers in the sport have a higher risk of developing a degenerative brain condition, a study has found.

It looked at the results of post-mortem examinations of 31 former amateur and elite rugby union players whose brains were donated for research purposes. The average rugby career length in the study was around 18 years, with an equal number of forwards and backs examined. Twenty-three played rugby as amateurs, with eight reaching elite level, either as professionals or internationals., the lead author of the study, said the results meant it was “imperative” that rugby regulators “reduce exposure to repeated head impacts in match play and in training”.
