Women are being arrested at anti-war protests in Russia in larger numbers than men, and the gap is growing. An estimated 30 per cent of arrests at protests in February and March were women.
FAR was initially able to take advantage of sexist attitudes within the regime to escape the brutal treatment meted out to other anti-war groups. “It’s not a secret that the Russian government hasn’t taken feminists seriously,” says Sofia, an activist who left for the UK and like others within the movement does not give a full name. “It was easy for FAR to start operating and spread awareness.”
That grace period has since expired as regime forces have normalised brutality against women. Female activists have reported torture and abuse in Russian detention facilities.
