On the surface, a deal negotiated by Belarusian president Aleksandr Lukashenko seems to have put an end to the rebellion led by Wagner paramilitary group chief Yevgeny Prigozhin.to the neighbouring country, where its leader has ruled with an iron fist since 1994.

Whether such disobedience will be tolerated by the government in Minsk is yet to be determined, but Lukashenko has been acquainted with Prigozhin for the better part of 20 years, according to a Kremlin spokesperson.It is the most recent dramatic development and a moment that many feel may signal theIt cannot be denied that his position has been weakened despite his address to the nation yesterday evening in which he stressed that ‘any blackmail is doomed to fail’.

Away from the turmoil in Russia, Ukrainian military chiefs are pushing with their counteroffensive efforts on the frontlines in the south and the east of the country.
