Among its key findings were that “institutional racism, misogyny and homophobia and bullying in the Met were “widespread”. “The evidence is damning. Baroness Casey has found institutional racism, misogyny and homophobia, which I accept. She has described the Met as defensive, resistant to change and unwilling to engage with communities. “As Mayor, I’ve already acted to put the Met on a path of far-reaching systematic and cultural reform, with the appointment of a new Commissioner and leadership team who acknowledge the scale of the problems and are committed to change.
It also highlighted the fact that Britain’s biggest force remains disproportionately white in a capital that is increasingly diverse. Several high-profile scandals in recent years have undermined public trust in law enforcement, including the leaking of photos of murder victims Bibaa Henry and Nicole Smallman in Wembley by on-duty police officers in 2020, the the strip search of Child Q and the exposure of serving police officers exchanging hate-filled messages on Whatsapp chat groups.
In an effort to tackle these issues Khan, in partnership with the Met, unveiled a series of measures in December last year aimed at improving trust and confidence of Londoners in the Metropolitan Police. Khan said: “I want to assure Londoners that I’ll be unflinching in my resolve to support and hold the new Commissioner to account as he works to overhaul the force. The Met has many committed, professional police officers and staff who want to be part of this change.Marsha De Cordova, Labour MP for Battersea
“We are failing to protect, through our collective effort policing communities, and the tactics we are using aren’t building trust, So we’ve got to come together, because we want the trust.” In an earlier statement Braverman said that the “The vast majority of the people who serve in our Met Police force are honest, decent, brave professionals… but it is clear there have been systemic problems for far too long.
