EXCLUSIVE: Former Liverpool winger Jermaine Pennant has his say on Mohamed Salah's future, who he'd sign to replace him, and his old club's recent transfer business
The 31-year-old has started the season with six goals and four assists from 10 appearances and is already starting to reel in a landmark 200th goal for the Reds. Boasting 192 goals from 315 games since moving to Anfield in the summer of 2017, you would not bet against him recording his double-century before the end of the calendar year.
Out of contract in 2025, Saudi Arabian interest is expected to rear its head again next summer. And this time it won’t just be Al-Ittihad interested in the forward, with Al-Hilal also tipped to make a move. “If that’s the case, that’s your ambition, then obviously he’s always going to choose Liverpool. But in the latter stages of his career, he’s 31 now, so maybe in three years time, maybe he might start thinking about it Saudi Arabia. With that contract expiry in 2025 looming regardless of Saudi interest, Salah’s future will remain the subject of speculation for the foreseeable future.
While it currently seems like a virtually impossible job to replace Salah, Liverpool can at least take encouragement from their successful attacking overhaul to date. Waving off Mane and Firmino in the last two summers, the Reds have complemented such high-profile departures with the arrivals of Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez and Cody Gakpo.
“I had the pleasure of playing with Crouchy . All I had to do was just put it in the box and I knew he was going to get there, hence why I got so many assists playing with him.Liverpool’s playing style has admittedly changed considerably in the 15 years since Pennant last played for the club, with the most obvious difference being inverted wide-forwards replacing traditional wingers like the former Reds man.
“I think that’s a tough one because you wouldn’t mind playing him in both positions,” he pondered. “It’s just a great attribute to have.
