Former Everton manager Sam Allardyce has been speaking about Dominic Calvert-Lewin
Calvert-Lewin was still developing as a player while Allardyce was in charge of the Blues, managing three goals in 18 Premier League appearances under him during the 2017/18 season. Since then, he has evolved into a mature goalscorer, thanks partly to the guidance of three-time Champions League-winning manager Carlo Ancelotti.
During the 2020/21 campaign, under the Italian, Calvert-Lewin’s goal tally rocketed to 16, as the striker was encouraged to get himself into the box more often and adapt his choice of runs. However, the England international has struggled with regular injuries in recent years but was deemed fit to start against Aston Villa on Sunday.
But Calvert-Lewin’s return ended in disappointment after he was forced off during the first-half with a facial injury after he collided with Emiliano Martinez in the Villa goal. He said: "Dominic was always going to be a great player because I think he was 19 or 20 when he was playing with me up front, but he couldn’t score the goals that he’s started scoring, so as he matured in a couple of years and has all that experience, he started putting the ball in the back of the net.
"So, he became Everton’s biggest player. The biggest one they needed to keep. But for the last two seasons, or last two years, there’s one injury after another injury after another injury."
