Sampha’s first album was a meditation on the loss of his mother and made him a peer of Solange, Frank Ocean and Drake. Six years later, fatherhood has made him euphoricSampha Sisay has always had a knack for getting to the point. The south London songwriter and producer is part of a generation of artists who have found success with a sort of floaty, angst-soaked R&B. It is no coincidence his collaborators have included fellow wispy wunderkinds Solange, Frank Ocean and Drake.

All are fantastic in their own ways. But you do sometimes wish they would get on with it. That’s precisely what Sampha did on his . A meditation on mortality and the meaning of life recorded in the aftermath of his mother’s death, it was often heavy but never indulgent. He had a lot to get off his chest – yet was mindful throughout of his responsibility to engage the listener and keep the music interesting. It wasn’t all about him.– the middle name he shares with his grandfather – is all about joy.

Becoming a parent during the pandemic has profoundly realigned Sampha’s worldview. He embraces positivity on “Spirit 2.0” – an ode to human connection that glows with choral warmth. “Waves will catch you, light will catch you / Love will catch you, spirit gon’ catch you”, he gushes on a chorus that beams like sunshine on an overcast day.He strikes an even more tender note on “Suspended”, a cosmic bopper where he likens romantic connection to a spiritual awakening.

It is ambitious and intricate – but at its core has a simple message: that love is the most powerful and liberating emotion of all.Television
