, Sarah Cawood – working in broadcasting and daring to have a good time “ladettes”. But it wasn’t anywhere near as debauched as they’d have had you believe. “I remember it was a time of extremes,” Cox says. “There’d be moments where you were out all the time, kicking up your heels and having wild times. But actually, there was also a lot of being quite sensible, of being a bit of a homebody.

Cox, prior to that Nineties fame, had briefly been a model after being raised between her dad’s farm and her mum’s pub in Bolton – the two divorced when she was six or seven. Fame wasn’t really on the cards with a paternal line of “farmer, farmer, butcher, farmer, butcher – people growing cows and killing cows”.

Which isn’t to say her dad’s not now proud of what Cox has achieved. “He is in a very stoic, farmerish, northern dad kind of way,” she confirms. “He went through a stage of wishing that I had kept modelling for a bit – then I’d have kept my trap shut and not been on telly calling people wankers. I think that was a bit of a shock! Especially because I’m the youngest.

It should have been a recipe for success: live music, dogs and celebrities in conversation. Much the same as what makes her current Radio 2 show sing .is no consolation prize and Cox is now a published author herself, having released an autobiography. Does this make her more equipped to handle a telly programme about books? “I’m not qualified yet to even think like that,” she protests. “I’ve only written a memoir. The second one’s happening now [a novel].

It’s certainly true that Cox’s career is in the strongest position it’s ever been. But in the years between those early TV gigs and today, it’s not been without its bumps.
