Elite soldiers were trapped in Kandahar, Afghanistan, with enemy fighters closing in when they were air-lifted out in the dead of night.
The speed of the Taliban’s advance through the country meant that the airfield in Kandahar was already off limits so a suitable location had to be found in a desert.
The plane, capable of landing and taking off again from desert terrain, was briefly picked up by flight radar on Wednesday night before its trackers were turned off.
