Scotland’s Gender Recognition Reform bill was passed in Holyrood earlier today by 86 votes in favour and 39 against and has been described as “a victory for trans and all human rights in Scotland” by the LGBTQ+ charity Stonewall.
To understand the Gender Recognition Reform bill, we first need to understand the Gender Recognition Act 2004. A GRC allows the holder to have the sex marker of their birth certificate changed. A GRC is not required to change documents such as passports, driving licenses or details with other businesses and organisations. It has the effect of changing your legally recognised sex for “all purposes.”
