Driver Brett McCullough, conductor Donald Dinnie and passenger Christopher Stuchbury all lost their lives when the train hit a landslide near Stonehaven on August 12, 2020.

ScotRail has paid tribute to three people who were killed after a tragic derailment in Aberdeenshire three years on from the fatal incident.A report by the Rail Accident Investigation Branch found failings by Carillion and Network Rail had led to the crash, making more than 20 recommendations a year ago.

ScotRail said on Twitter: "Today is the third anniversary of the tragic accident at Carmont, when we lost our colleagues Brett McCullough and Donald Dinnie, and passenger Christopher Stuchbury. An investigation by the UK Department for Transport's Rail Accident Investigation Branch was published last March. It concluded the crash had been caused by a wrongly-built drainage trench which led to debris being washed onto the track after intense rainfall.

But the organisation also said the outcome would likely have been better if the train had met crashworthiness standards introduced in 1994.
