Suzanne Gillman conned the benefits agency out of £40,000 by claiming throughout the period while hiding the fact she was in paid employment in a jewellery shop.

A pensioner who systematically cheated the benefits system for over seven years has persuaded a sheriff to delay her case - because prison might be too 'difficult' for her.

But he persuaded Sheriff Jennifer Bain KC to defer sentence in the case to investigate whether Gillman would be able to cope with a period behind bars. "She is 65 and has no previous convictions. She has a significant medical condition that requires treatment. I submit that, whilst it is a high figure, there are potentially truly exceptional circumstances for the court to avoid a custodial sentence.

Top news stories today Gillman, 65, Picture House Court, Blairgowrie, admitted that between 27 March 2011 and 11 May 2018 she claimed £40,000 Employment Support Allowance she was not entitled to. She said it became clear that Gillman - after a short period off work with illness - had returned to work in the Dundee branch of Beaverbrooks and had continued in her role.
