Superparents Maryelen and Billy McPhail have thrown open their doors – and hearts – to 60 children in the past two decades
. The couple, from Ayr, have fostered 54 children and adopted three children as well as having three genetic kids.
And as well as juggling child care, Maryelen has established a charity, Oshay’s, to support children with FASD and urges anyone thinking of fostering to learn more about disabilities. FASD is a lifelong disability which affects the brain and body of people who were exposed to alcohol in the womb. Of all the substances of abuse including marijuana, cocaine and heroin, alcohol is the most damaging.
Top news stories today Maryelen and Billy were shocked by how widespread FASD is. Often what is seen as bad behaviour is simply a misunderstanding.
