EXCLUSIVE: Scots Tory health spokesman Sandesh Gulhane is planning to ditch Holyrood for Westminster after being chosen to stand in East Renfrewshire at the next general election
A senior Scottish Conservative MSP is aiming to swap Holyrood for Westminster amid claims Tories are "fleeing like rats from a sinking ship".
Gulhane's desire to become an MP was seized on by the Nationalists and Labour last night as proof of Douglas Ross's shrinking authority as Scottish Conservatives leader. Jackie Baillie, Scottish Labour deputy leader, said: "This is just more proof that Tories are fleeing Douglas Ross’ leadership like rats from a sinking ship - and it must be bad if they are leaving to prop up the economically illiterate and morally bankrupt Tory government instead.
"This move just underlines the lack of respect Tories have for The Scottish Parliament and how little they really think of Douglas Ross’ hapless leadership. It’s clear that the Tories are going nowhere at Holyrood and even their frontbenchers know it as they desperately seek escape routes." Both the SNP and Labour have tightened their party rules in recent years to make it harder for elected politicians to swap parliaments.
