The dog-related services, which have exploded in recent years, are being lined up for new regulations with a proper licensing regime applied.
He said that a proper licensing process with full inspections by vets would save many animals from suffering.“I would fully support a licensing regime that involves, at least, an initial inspection by veterinary experts before any licence is granted. He said: “We have hearing situations where people with no veterinary qualifications are injecting dogs with pig hormones that can increase a litter from two or three pups to eight.
Daily Record vet Neil McIntosh said it was clear that many unqualified people are being attracted to the rewards of unethical breeding. “There are unqualified people who are carrying out treatments on dogs which no vet would consider doing and there is a very strong case for a proper licensing system, with proper enforcement.”
Environment Minister Gillian Martin said: “With greater regulation of the sector, we can give more confidence to people that are interacting and buying services from animal care service providers that these businesses are operating to the highest possible welfare standards.
