Hard-up Scots are increasingly applying for extra help to pay their bills as the cost of living mounts

The Scottish Government handed local councils £56 million to fund the scheme, which offers a range of grants to people already claiming benefits depending on personal circumstances. Large parts of the benefits system remain reserved to Westminster but Holyrood has the power to mitigate the impact of individual policies.
Shirley-Anne Somerville, the Social Security Secretary, today described the rise in applications to the welfare fund as "a stark illustration of the financial pressures many households are currently facing".
