Ohtani's habit of speaking only after his pitching starts doesn't allow for much clarity regarding the questions about his future.
It’s added to his enigmatic nature. He lets his play do the talking, and once a week he lets the world know what’s on his mind. But now, in the context of his torn UCL, his reticence about stepping into the spotlight has left the sport turned upside down trying to figure out what all of this means.
“There was no pain,” Nevin said. “People want to speculate all they want. That was not the case. That is not true. He just felt what he called fatigue.” That’s how things work, to some extent, with Ohtani’s communication. Ohtani and his agent, Nez Balelo, make the decisions and the organization follows suit.
It’s important to understand the dynamic, as well. The Angels don’t have any say in Ohtani-related matters five weeks from now. They’re less likely to be directly involved in long-term injury decisions because they don’t have anything at stake, outside of a significant desire to re-sign him in free agency.“Him and his representation are going to come up with a plan,” Minasian said. “But as we sit here today, he’s going to play until he tells us he’s not.
