A greenwashing probe by the competition regulator over ‘misleading’ labels in fast fashion has been widened to cover food and drink
believes that companies may be exaggerating their green credentials in an attempt to lure environmentally aware consumers into buying goods, with no evidence to back their green-friendly claims.
It added that the average household spent almost £70 a week on food and drink, estimating that more than £130bn was spent in the sector annually. It said concerning practices could include the use of vague and broad eco-statements – for example, packaging or marketing a product as “sustainable” or “better for the environment” with no evidence.
