Campaigners say Shropshire Council, which is pushing forward plans for Shrewsbury's controversial North West Relief Road, is not serious about the climate emergency - after new forecasts suggested traffic could soar by 44 per cent in the next two decades.
A campaign group has said Shropshire Council, which is pushing forward plans for Shrewsbury's controversial North West Relief Road, is "not serious" about the climate emergency - after new forecasts suggested traffic could soar by 44 per cent in the next two decades. An artist's impression of how Shrewsbury's North West Relief Road may look.
Mike Streetly, a spokesperson for Better Shrewsbury Transport, said: “This report is important because the predicted increase in traffic under the ‘core’ scenario is similar to that being used by Shropshire Council to make the economic case for the proposed North West Relief Road . In both cases the amount of carbon emissions reduction is well short of what’s needed to tackle the climate emergency.
A planning application for the four-mile stretch of road drew more than 4,000 objections, with major concerns over the environmental impacts and costs to the taxpayer.
