Early this month, a 39-year-old man was hanged in Singapore for trafficking heroin, the third such execution in a week

“But from a political standpoint it sounds good to say that they are being tough on crime and have zero tolerance for drugs, especially after so many years of building a moral panic around drugs. It also fits into the overall pattern of top-down paternalistic control that we have in Singapore.”

“He was very playful and naughty; he was the one who gets the most blame from my father,” Angelia recalled of her brother. “While in church he played the drums, and he’s always singing while he’s in the shower. When I was young, I’d sometimes go with him on the bike. He will stop suddenly and then he will buy drinks for the construction workers under the hot sun.”

“We were very down mentally, emotionally, financially, because there’s a massive exchange rate between Malaysia and Singapore and it’s draining us,” said Angelia. “My sister used to come up and down staircases a lot, begging the lawyers to take our case. The lawyers already knew we were Malaysian, why we were here, and that we didn’t have a lot of money.
