Professor Julia Waters, whose sister Ruth Perry took her own life, accused Ofsted of issuing 'misleading, dangerous' assessments of schools

has urged staff to “hand in their badges” as another school announced it is taking the education watchdog to court.over its handling of inspections and demands for reform following a number of controversies.

“We had to speak out because we want no other family to experience the pain that we have felt,” she said.“Ruth was not an inadequate headteacher.” Addressing hundreds of school leaders in Telford on Saturday, Prof Waters said: “Take down your banners and write to parents to tell them that you’re doing this and why you’re doing it.“So stop promoting them.”

“If somebody comes into your school, and, without foundation, says there are widespread safeguarding issues in your school, all the hard work you have strived for pales into insignificance,” she said. “We wish to be clear that our objections are not simply a dispute over the interpretation of the evidence.

Ofsted says its one-word assessments, which have been criticised for being too simplistic, are easier for parents to understand.
