People risking everything from E coli to listeria as Great British Bake Off encourages us back into our kitchens
A leading doctor has warned certain cutlery and baking utensils could be making us ill with potentially life-threatening diseases, just as Great British Bake Off is set to return to our TV screens. Bacteria lurking in some styles of cutlery and cooking utensils, can cause gastrointestinal complaints such as E coli and listeria, and even lung disease legionnaires, due to the way they’re manufactured.
“Pâté can lead to listeria, a nasty stomach bug which poses a greater threat to over 65s, expectant mums and new-borns. And gone-off foods such as egg or meat-based meals, can lead to a growth in bacteria causing problems like salmonella and E coli. With something as simple as the humble teaspoon, Dr Tang recommends using a smooth one-piece, made from a single cut of metal where organisms cannot hide. “When it comes to cutlery, especially, simple is best. Basic designs out of one piece of steel or silver are much safer than a complex design with miniscule gaps harbouring germs.”Cheese grater – rinse immediately after use, as hard cheese will be difficult to remove. Give it a generous soak in hot water and soap for a good half-an-hour.
