Symptoms in most cases are related to a mole that takes an irregular shape or is more than one colour. Moles may be larger than normal too, or may bleed. Lentigo maligna melanoma is a slow growing form of the cancer, growing over a number of years. It is most common in elderly people who have spent a lot of time outdoors.
Moles are most often round or oval, with a smooth edge, and are not usually larger than 6mm - or 1/4 inch - in diameter. It can be difficult to tell the difference between a 'normal' mole and a melanoma mole sometimes. However, to help, you can use the ABCDE checklist:
