In the last week, the government has come under fire over its backing of former MP Owen Paterson, who was found to have breached rules on lobbying
Mr Johnson said for"hundreds of years" MPs have also had other jobs, and he thinks that has strengthened the UK's democracy because voters"feel parliamentarians need to have experience of the world".
A week ago he ordered his MPs to vote against punishing Owen Paterson after the Standards Committee said he was guilty of an"egregious" breach of the rules. But at his COP26 Glasgow news conference, clearly prepared for sleaze questions, he suggested – not entirely convincingly – that he wouldn't tolerate rule-breaking on"second jobs and all that" in future.
But Labour's deputy leader Angela Rayner said Mr Johnson's refusal to apologise for the Paterson affair"proves that he doesn't care about tackling the corruption that has engulfed Downing Street, his government and the Conservative Party". "The worst thing is that he can apparently do nothing for his constituency, fail to attend Westminster, spend weeks in the BVI, and nobody here knows or cares and continues to vote sheep-like for him at every election."
"I do not believe that Geoffrey Cox is able to concentrate fully on his role as an MP whilst he is carrying out other roles... he is not committed to his constituency."
