Being a side sleeper gives you wrinkles, according to a theory being discussed on social media. What do the experts say?
As we age, we shift position less often during the night, which can increase pressure on one side of the face for a reason, but if you’re a side sleeper you may be undoing some of the benefits. That’s according to social media users, who have been debating whether “side sleepers” or “face sleepers” – those who sleep on their sides, or face down – are more likely to develop wrinkles.
“The premise revolves around mechanical compression, which occurs when the face is pressed against a pillow while sleeping. Over time it is thought that this impairs blood flow to the tissues, which reduces their nutrient supply. Repeated compression on one side can ultimately reduce volume on one side of the face more than the other.”
In addition, this compression may cause skin to fold, which can injure dermal collagen fibres, which causes more lines and deepens existing ones. He says. “I am usually able to guess which side a patient sleeps on,” he says., says that as we age the number of times we shift position in the night decreases by up to 30 per cent, meaning we stay in one place for long periods, increasing pressure on one side of the face.” she says.
