The rundown building has been transformed
with a difference. General manager Dave Eland, a professional chef, said:"It's not your average pub menu. I didn't want to do what everyone else is doing, so there's no pies, no burgers and no fish and chips. What we've done is take some classics and some more modern dishes and have lifted up the ante with it."
Anthony said:"Hopefully people will come and enjoy it as an experience. As far as I'm aware there's nobody else doing anything quite like that in terms of a menu that's got wine and beer pairings. We are trying to encourage people to try beer as the ideal accompaniment with dishes rather than wine. Wine's great, don't get me wrong, there are some fantastic wines out there that match dishes really well.
Inside, the restaurant has a different view, whichever part you sit in, from midnight teal columns and a fireplace to leafy backed chairs, retro telephones on one wall and vintage beer trays on another above a comfy looking orange banquette. What is likely to be the best spot in the house, according to Anthony, are the tables overlooking the bi-fold doors into the large beer garden.
Strawberies and cream is a cheeky take on the flavours of the old-fashioned boiled sweets, while Jiffy is a classic British IPA. Two guest ales will kick off with Proper Job IPA from St Austell and Timothy Taylor's Landlord.
