SNP accounts for 2022 show it recorded its largest ever deficit despite not having a national election campaign to fight.
The SNP plunged £800,000 into the red last year as it dealt with a slump in party membership numbers and donations.
The party admitted the first months of 2023 had "presented significant challenges" following the resignation of Nicola Sturgeon as leader and the election of Humza Yousaf as her successor. Stuart McDonald, national treasurer, said in his annual report it was "important to return the party to surplus as we build towards the next general election".Membership income fell from £2,516,854 in 2021 to £2,286,944 in 2022. Reportable donations fell from £695,351 to £368,538.He loaned the party £107,620 in July 2021 to help with cashflow issues but the transaction was only made public in December 2022.
It saw Murray Foote, the SNP's then head of communications, dismiss a Sunday Mail story about 30,000 members quitting the party as "drivel" - only for it to be proved correct. The SNP announced yesterday that Foote had been appointed as the party's new chief executive. He said: 'These accounts, like previous years, illustrate the huge significance of individual membership income and donations for the party.
