All three SNP leadership candidates have called on their party to end its secrecy over the size of its membership so the public know the process is “fair and transparent”
“Your co-operation in this matter will not only demonstrate the SNP’s commitment to democratic values and principles but also help maintain a strong and united party during this leadership contest.”
As well as the total membership figure, they also asked Mr Murrell to provide the number of digital and postal voting documents the SNP had sent out., to ask her to provide the information but had “yet to receive a response”. Shortly after their letter was published, Mr Yousaf’s campaign manager Neil Gray said the Health Secretary also backed the calls for greater transparency.
“Yesterday, Humza’s campaign team also asked for the figures to be published and sought assurances this would be done as soon as possible,” he added.“The fact that two of the three candidates seeking to replace Nicola Sturgeon are openly questioning their party’s internal election process is utterly astonishing and reveals the deep levels of mistrust within the SNP.”
An SNP spokesperson said: “Candidates have already been made aware that responsibility for the leadership election does not rest with any member of staff.”
