He cherishes this time because he doesn’t get any of it in season. In season, his day job as the video coach of the They spend their summers learning about the latest piece of technology and considering first, if the older staff they deal with will understand it, and second, if it’ll save time. More recently, an analytics revolution has also added what Pringle calls a “crazy amount of information to parse through.”“How you’re used and how much video the coach and the staff want to utilize always depends on the head coach,” Leonhardt explained.
Pringle builds loops that roll in the dressing room or players’ lounge area before games so that as they’re getting ready they can watch things like the opposing goalie’s tendencies. He also sends faceoff reels for the opposing centers out to his centres a day or two before each game in order to cut down on the length of meetings.On game days, Pringle and Leonhardt’s routines differ because of the time zones they’re in. Pringle gets to the rink around 6:30 a.m.
“You miss being behind the bench in junior, and there’s a lot of mundane things to it, but there are certainly rewards to it and I guess that’s what keeps me going,” Pringle said. He stumbled backwards into his second job after Googling “video coach hockey” and coming across a posting for the Hockey Canada job Pringle had just held.
