. It is a vicious circle but targeted help for social care is start and a key component of fixing this crisis.
The Government has done this today by announcing an extra £250m to the £500m already promised for its Adult Social Care Discharge Fund. They money will fund maximum stays of up to four weeks per patient until the end of March. Integrated care boards – organisations that arrange health services in each local area – will begin booking beds that are most appropriate to patients’ needs.
it will be nothing more than a winter quick fix, and the same problems will return. There were at least 165,000 vacancies across adult social care providers at the end of 2021-22, latest figures show. Successive Governments prove incapable of even trying to fix social care once and for all. In November’s Autumn Statement,to fundamentally reform social care funding and charging by kicking plans for a social care cap into the long grass.
Short-term extra investment is always welcome, but it is nothing more than a sticking plaster. Until a bold plan for reform finally arrives, people in need of social care will remain second-class citizens in the eyes of the Government.
