Blackpool army veteran who saw mate killed died after being told 'no mental health beds available'

An Army veteran who saw his friend being shot in the face took his own life weeks after being told there were no mental health beds available.

READ MORE: Young Preston dad chased by loan shark took own life after telling girlfriend: 'I'll watch over you' Lee, who had seen his friend being shot when he served in the British Army between 2000 and 2003, told mental health practitioners that 'opening up to his family made him realise his actions were silly'. He had strong protective factors in his close family; his mum, sister and his son. On March 9, Lee was discharged from the home treatment team after saying he did not want to take anti-depressants or receive counselling.

Before he took his own life Lee, an aerial fitter who was originally from Whitehaven, had deleted all the data from his phone and between 1am and 2am recorded a series of videos on his phone for his family. In one video he said he had tried to call the crisis team twice that night but had been unable to get through.

"He seemed unwilling to seek help and talk about his problems. All this changed on February 26 when he made a succession of very serious attempts to take his own life.
