Richard McCann, the son of Wilma McCann, the first victim of Peter Sutcliffe, also known as the Yorkshire Ripper, marked the anniversary of his mother's death. He shared his feelings on social media, describing the day as difficult.
As the end of October rolled around, the son of Wilma McCann, one of the victims of Peter Sutcliffe , also known as the Yorkshire Ripper , marked the anniversary of his mother’s death. Richard McCann along with his older sister Sonia were depicted in the first episode of ITV ’s The Long Shadow, where the two children waited for their mum to return home while waiting at a bus stop.
Richard wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter: “Always a difficult morning on the 30th October. 48 years ago. Right now, my sister Sonia and I were sat at the local bus stop waiting for Mum to arrive. We never saw her again. It wasn’t light as dramatized on ITV recently. It was dark and cold. RIP Mam. #hernamewaswilmamccann.”
The drama used first-hand accounts of those involved in the large-scale investigation, as well as the stories of those who had relatives murdered by Sutcliffe. Based on Wicked Beyond Belief, Michael Bilton’s critically acclaimed account of the case, the series has drawn on an extensive archive of the investigation, consisting of hundreds of case files, interview transcripts with detectives involved and police reports.
Sonia was just seven years old when her mum was killed. Richard himself was five and his other sisters, Donna and Angela, were three and four respectively. Sadly, back in 2007, Richard’s older sister Sonia died by suicide.
