IT was heartwarming to see all the Glasgow kids’ pictures on social media this week as proud parents posted and wished them well for the year ahead.
It’s that thing about new starts, blank pages, fresh sheets, uncomplicated and unused. A sense of anticipation and excitement.The millennium celebrations – we had a Labour government at Westminster and had just welcomed our first elected members to the Scottish Parliament. Glasgow is at its lowest ebb at the moment after six years of SNP administration in the City Chambers and nearly 16 years of divisive nationalist politics along the road in Edinburgh.
Children, particularly in our own city, have had a horrific few years – the onset of Covid, the recovery from a global pandemic, having to adapt to new ways of learning, the constant litany of news about the cost-of-living crisis and all set in the backdrop of social media influencing and pressure, that is just the tip of the iceberg of what they are facing.
