Despite a huge overhaul of the squad, Ankersen also failed to deliver then-manager Ralph Hasenhuttl the one position he desperately craved – a centre-forward.After overly ambitious moves for Benfica’s Goncalo Ramos and Cody Gakpo failed, Hasenhuttl was left with an inconsistent Che Adams, a confidence-drained Adam Armstrong and the unknown Sekou Mara to carry his attack.
The most bizarre element of this appointment was that Ankersen spent months planning to replace Hasenhuttl and flirted with the idea of hiring famed River Plate chief Marcelo Gallardo among other big-name contenders.
