That did little to quell the backlash, though, while Rubiales initially dubbed critics of his actions ‘idiots’ beforeclaim there was friction behind the scenes over the two statements, with Hermoso’s written on her behalf by the RFEF and she was not aware of the contents.

The incident has now become a political matter, with Spanish prime minister Pedro Sanchez – who greeted the whole squad and Rubiales on Tuesday – saying the RFEF president’s apology does not suffice. ‘What we saw was an unacceptable gesture,’ said Sanchez. ‘Rubiales’ apologies are not enough, I even think they are not adequate.
