🇪🇸 Spain's Canary Islands asks EU for Brexit rule exemption to lure remote-working Brits ➡️ Letting Britons stay will boost the economy, says regional president Ángel Victor Torres, as islands plan special digital nomad visa
The Canary Islands wants to attract Britons who aim to escape to the sun, both for retirement or while still working IN GRAN CANARIA – As temperatures plunge below zero, most people in Britain are dressed as if they were on a polar expedition – but on this Canary Island the scene was very different as tourists in shorts and T-shirts enjoyed the balmy temperatures of about 24C.
After Brexit, however, Britons – as with and other non-EU nationals – can only stay in Spain and other EU countries for 90 days in every 180., but the Canary Islands government wants Brussels to do away with current restrictions. “We want to ask Brussels to make an exception for the Canary Islands to change so that non-EU workers like the British can stay longer,” Mr Torres toldin an interview at the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development conference on the world’s digital future. It is being held in Gran Canaria.
Increasingly, these itinerant workers bring not just money but talent to their host countries, said Mr Torres.
