Another heatwave has hit Spain, with forecasters warning of fire risks
People visiting a number of popular Spanish destinations have been hit with a warning as sweltering heat is posing a fire risk.
Weather forecaster AEMET Baleares took to Twitter to warn people that there is an "extreme" or "very high" fire risk on the islands of Mallorca and Menorca amid temperatures of up to 37C. It is the fourth heatwave to hit Spain this summer. A tweet from AEMET Baleares on Monday said: "Today 8-21-2023 EXTREME/VERY HIGH fire risk index in areas of #Mallorca and VERY HIGH in areas of #Menorca."The forecasters added it will be: "Slightly cloudy or clear skies for today Monday in the archipelago. Max 31-37C, the highest are expected in the interior and south of Mallorca. Light north and northeast wind with coastal breezes in the afternoon.
Temperatures of up to 40C are expected in the valleys encompassing the Ebro, Tagus, Guadiana, and Guadalquivir, along with other localised zones including Andalucia, Euro Weekly News reports.Firefighters have been battling a huge wildfire on the island of Tenerife which has so far forced thousands of people to flee. The blaze broke out after the heatwave, and thousands of acres of land have burned in Spain since the start of 2023.
