Specialist Accrington school set for new classroom on council's orders
Lancashire County Council is proposing to construct the timber-framed building in the grounds of The Oswaldtwistle School in Union Road, Oswaldtwistle. It will be in the unused corner of the school’s yard.
A document supporting a planning application for the ‘outside classroom’ says: “Oswaldtwistle School is a 95-place secondary alternative provision school for young people who require something additional or alternative to the core that is offered by the mainstream sector.“Many of the young people we work with may not have experienced a very positive time at their mainstream school, with some struggling to access their provision due to a decline in their mental health.
“We pride ourselves on the inclusive nature of our provision, the breadth of our curriculum and all that we do to help students to develop the skills, competencies, and confidence they need to achieve their full potential, enjoy life, and become the best they can. In order to meet the needs of all our students, we require additional space, hence our planning application for an outside classroom adjacent to the main building.
“The building will be located away from the main road and will sit behind the school’s fencing and hedges in hope that it will not impact on the local community. The site of the proposed outdoor classroom is to be located to the north of the main building, on an enclosed and unused corner of the existing yard.
“The building will be constructed primarily from a timber frame and clad externally to all four sides with Cedral ‘Light Oak horizontal cladding. Using timber frame construction with timber cladding, the building will blend well with the natural surroundings. The design has been chosen to best match the style and fit with the aesthetics of the existing school building.”
