'Someone could be seriously hurt'
A councillor has urged residents to back a campaign calling for speed cameras to be installed on a “speeding hotspot” residential road.
“Thousands more live on adjacent roads and estates and need to be able to access its shops and services safely as pedestrians. The road is well-known to residents, police and road safety campaigners as a speeding hotspot.“The existing 30mph speed limit is there to save lives, and it deserves to be enforced. The Lancashire Road Safety Partnership has the power to achieve this by recommending the installation of cameras at high-risk locations along the road.
She added: “It is the only major route into the valley without speed cameras - a residential road for most of its length with a community centre, a school and accommodation for the elderly at various points on the road. There is also no safe crossing place along the entire five miles of the road. I have now launched a new campaign to try and get action from the Lancashire Road Traffic Partnership.
A spokesman for Lancashire County Council said: “We work closely with the police as part of the Lancashire Road Safety Partnership to improve safety on our roads and consider the most effective approach to speed enforcement. The partnership has recently assessed the 30mph section of Burnley Road East in response to the concerns raised.
