Although Liverpool are not involved, the Spirit of Shankly are in opposition of the Premier League's first Christmas Eve match since 1995
Liverpool Supporters' Union Spirit of Shankly have published a statement titled 'Why do Sky Sports want to steal Christmas?' after it was announced Wolves vs Chelsea would be the first top-flight December 24th fixture in 28 years.
Before the fixture list was released it was explained that a judgement would be made not just to favour broadcasters, but to balance the scheduling of other competitions and the capabilities of local authorities to police the matches. "Spirit of Shankly oppose Premier League football on Christmas Eve and we strongly condemn the decision, driven by Sky Sports, to reschedule the Wolves v Chelsea fixture to this special family day.
"We have been here before. Six years ago Sky tried to reschedule Arsenal v Liverpool to an evening kick off on Christmas Eve. The idea was eventually scrapped due to the backlash from fans, many of whom faced the prospect of being stranded in London if they chose to go to the game."For fans who watch on television, or the casual viewer who likes any football on TV, it’s nothing more than just another game.
"And why, because Sky has decided Super Sunday should rule over a traditional period of celebration?"
