A nationwide state of emergency has been declared across Sri Lanka after massive protests over the economic crisis. The president has fled the country, and multiple government buildings have been occupied in the protests.

On Wednesday, protesters also scaled the wall of Mr Wickremesinghe's office compound as crowds cheered in support and waved the Sri Lankan flag.

Bhasura Wickremesinghe, a 24-year-old student, said the president fleeing the country was a"timid act". The source, who declined to be identified, said Mr Rajapaksa could send his resignation to the speaker of the Sri Lankan parliament when he landed."We have requested political leaders to decide the way forward till a new president is sworn in and notify us and the public by this evening," Mr Silva said.
