Sir Keir pledged during his campaign to become party leader to “support the abolition of tuition fees”, after the promise was included in Labour’s last two general election manifestos under his predecessor Jeremy Corbyn.programme on Tuesday, the Labour leader said the party would be likely to “move on” from the pledge and seek to “set out a fairer solution” in order to tackle the struggling“We are looking at options for how we fund these fees.
“We are likely to move on from that commitment because we do find ourselves in a different financial situation.” However, the move, which aligns Labour’s policy on higher education closely with the Tory party, was met with backlash from Mr Corbyn and his allies. Mr Corbyn, who remains an independent MP after being suspended from Labour following a row over anti-semitism, said “young people should not be saddled with a lifetime of debt just because they want to get an education”.Mr McDonnell, a staunch ally of Mr Corbyn who served as shadow Chancellor under his leadership, toldthat the U-turn was a “real shame for young people” that marked a risky political move in the run-up to the next general election.
“When differences between the parties become so slight it’s easy for Tories to steal policies and upstage Labour by going further,” he said.Related Article
