His party believes some targets are essential while others can be jettisoned. When people are dying because ambulances can’t reach them, this looks like a practical approach
Sir Keir Starmer and his deputy Angela Rayner during a visit to A&E at Princess Alexandra Hospital in Harlow, Essex earlier this year Keir Starmer knows that plenty of British voters remain undecided and that his lead in the polls is vulnerable. So today’s pledge to restore NHS targets –– is the Labour leader’s attempt to answer the big question he faces again and again: So what would you do? Starmer knows that if he wins he won’t have much wriggle room on public spending.
Why, then, are some NHS targets a good thing? The health service has certainly suffered from too many targets, too much demand and overstretched resource. While healthcare targets are essential – they focus minds on delivering results for patients – both the Tories and Labour are correct in saying that some must be abolished.
The recent Hewitt review found that an excessive focus on hitting targets by managers can lead to “gaming” and a “disastrous neglect of patients themselves”.to a dashboard flashing red on A&E waits,on cancer lists. This is tacit acknowledgement of the crunch the NHS faces from pandemic fallout, staff exodus and strikes.
Labour, meanwhile, believes that some targets are essential while others can be jettisoned. When many more people are dying because ambulances can’t reach them in time, this looks like a practical approach to prioritising resource, while not overlooking fatal trends in the NHS.
