For all that was achieved by Tevin Farmer and Danny Garcia, Bernard Hopkins was the last great fighter to emerge from Philadelphia. The revered heavyweight Joe Frazier was the highest-profile of them all. That he was also the last fighter the late Naazim Richardson worked with, and to the extent Richardson was in his corner for some of his biggest fights, Fulton – Wahid Rahim remains his trainer – represents one of the last links to Philly’s admired past.
Richardson did not live to see Fulton become a world champion because he died in July 2020, following a long illness, little over a week before the fight with Leo was scheduled to take place. Fulton, regardless, was unable to fight for the then-vacant title – just days later he tested positive for coronavirus, depriving him of his chance to win a world title until January 2021.
