On the wall of Steven Schumacher’s office is a card drawn by his nine-year-old niece Elsie when he became manager of Plymouth Argyle. Borrowing from the supporters’ chant it says: ‘ Schuey’s at the wheel’. Argyle fans love him and it is clear he loves being in the driving seat; even if the last few years at times have felt like a Formula 1 race with more twists and turns than Silverstone.

The 38-year-old smiles when he reflects on it. In four years he has retired as a player, coached at former club’s academy, studied for a Sports Journalism degree, achieved his UEFA A and Pro coaching licences, been relegated and promoted as assistant manager to Ryan Lowe with Bury, been promoted in the south west, and last December succeeded his friend as manager of the Home Park outfit.

His career trajectory reminds you of the Jim Carrey film Yes Man when the titular character flourished by never turning down an opportunity. For Schumacher, it became a motif as he jumped from one potentially daunting role to another.
