A council error led to a care home resident funding her own fees for a year longer than she should have done
Stockport council has apologised for causing 'significant distress and confusion' after a resident was wrongly charged more than £35,000 in care fees due to a mistake.
The Local Government and Social Care Ombudsman found the council's error caused Mrs D's daughter 'significant distress, inconvenience and financial hardship' over a prolonged period. The care provider wrote to Mrs D's daughter in June 2023 to arrange a £34,000 refund which was confirmed, but her solicitor claims she is still owed around £3,400. Further confusion was caused when the council sent an invoice for £16,000 without an explanation for what it was for.
