Robert Jenrick said it was “likely that very significant numbers of people will leave Sudan in the hours and days and weeks ahead” and the Government’s position was that those fleeing should “seek sanctuary in the first safe country”
Asked whether legal routes for Sudanese migrants would be available for those wishing to come to the UK, he said some could come here under existing family reunification schemes.
“I’ve already opened the conversation with the UNHCR as to how we might operationalise that and work with them to select people to come on that scheme,” he said. “We will do everything we can through our development budget and in other levers to support the UNHCR and the those organisations who will respond to people when they arrive in those neighbouring countries.”
