🔴 Rishi Sunak says BBC presenter claims ‘shocking and concerning’ but won’t change online privacy laws
as “shocking and concerning”, but insisted he would not strengthen social media laws to crack down on people wrongly naming other presenters.
“We’ve had those reassurances and that’s the right thing to do. Given the concerning nature of the allegations it is right they are investigated swiftly and rigorously, and it’s important we now let that carry on.”However, he defied calls to beef up privacy laws to keep pace with the era of social media, after several BBC stars voiced their fury at being falsely accused as the presenter at the centre of the crisis.
Asked whether he would make social media firms legally responsible for libellous claims on their platforms, the Prime Minister added: “I think the right focus is on safety and particularly safety and protection of our children.
